Fort Kaskaskia – Ellis Grove, Illinois

When a bride and groom get engaged, they automatically start thinking of how the day will look for them. Will they have a black tie event, run to the courthouse for a quick and simple ceremony? Will the event take place at a church where they grew up in or maybe where their parents were married? For Kelsey and Travis, they wanted an outdoor ceremony and they chose Fort Kaskaskia. Outdoor ceremonies are absolutely beautiful. There’s nothing better than getting married with a super scenic backdrop and having all of your friends and family sitting around you under the trees. I’ve photographed a lot of weddings at Fort Kaskaskia, but this was the first ceremony settled in the trees. There was a modern arbor with drapery and flowers positioned up top. It was simple but yet so perfect. The chairs were lined up in an arch too, not just your typical straight lines. You know me, I love shooting all of the details and there were details everywhere… even rustic doors that Kelsey stood behind with her father just before she walked down the aisle! As I walked around the ceremony site taking portraits of everything, I remember thinking that it looked so dreamy!

After a short but very sweet ceremony, we all made our way to the reception, which was held at the American Legion Hall in Steeleville. Tables were lined with blue satin fabric and cheesecloth table runners and there were wooden boxes with floral arrangements on top. The head table had a huge backdrop made out of wood pallets with a metal deer head sign hanging with their last name. If you know these two, you know how perfect everything was for them. If there’s one piece of advice I can give couples who are planning a wedding, it’s to have a wedding that YOU want. If you want a small and intimate wedding, have one! If you want a large wedding with all the bells and whistles that’s cool too. There’s no rules for wedding days. The only thing you should worry about is marrying your best friend and sharing that love with one another through the exchanging of vows and rings.

I’m so happy for these two and I’m so excited to finally share all of my favorites from their wedding day.

Kelsey and her dad love the song “Butterfly Kisses” so she got him a glass with a butterfly on it.
